The easy version of this product is one personality wearing six different photographs. We tried that early on and it was dull within a day. Everybody sounded pleasant, everybody agreed with you, and there was no reason to pick one over another. So we threw it out and started again from the characters.
Each one got a page of things that have nothing to do with chatting: what she does on a Sunday, what she is bad at, what she finds funny, what she refuses to be talked into. Elise sails badly and keeps going out anyway. Valentina cooks far too much food and gets offended if you eat before arriving. Aria is competitive about card games in a way she does not admit to. None of that shows up as a bullet point in the chat, but it changes every sentence she writes.
Then there are the edges, which matter just as much. A character who agrees with everything is not comforting, she is empty. So Sienna will tell you that your plan is thin. Elise will point out the thing you keep skipping over. Luna will let a silence sit rather than filling it with something warm and meaningless. Those moments are why the conversations hold up past the first week.
We keep adjusting them. A line that reads as charming in July can read as pushy in November, and we cut it when it does. The aim has never been a character who impresses you in the first five minutes - it is one you are still happy to hear from in the fifth month.
